New River Rendezvous Re-cap
Once again the New River Rendezvous was absolutely amazing! I flew back from some quality time with the family in San Diego to Philly where I drove most the night to some crazy (finding out they all are) trucker stop somewhere in West Virginia then punched it in the morning to Fayetteville. I hadn’t checked the weather report but not unlike character it was raining when I showed up. After the past 4 years coming to this event and observing the locals I’ve finally figured out that while in Fayetteville in May you’re either drinking, enjoying the rain or a combination of the 2. But true to form the clouds broke and Saturday the climbers were climbing!
Saturday morning found Griffin, Chaz, Preston and myself in front of the courthouse, nursing cups of black coffee and helping registrants out with the shoe demo. Then some of dispersed for an afternoon session on the rock while others opted for an afternoon ciesta.
Around 3:30 I made my way over to Burnside to finish putting the values up for the dyno comp with the help of JD and Amish.
By 5:00 most everyone was back and between the slacklines, hoola-hoops, dyno comp qualifiers, sumo-pad wrestling, PBR’s and dinner the attendee’s to Loco Ocho were pretty busy!
First up was the Schoeller Dare to wear Lycra walk off. It never ceases to amaze me how willing rock climbing males are to cross dress in front of large groups of people. Picture Right Said Fred’s “I’m too Sexy” blaring across a p.a. with a few hundred screaming spectators and men walking down a line of pic-nick tables pushed together wearing what looks like colors just painted on their bodies with nothing for the imagination about what’s underneath! And maybe throw in a halucinogen of your choice to tie it all together. That mental picture come together for you? well if not here’s a video of it =) (ps.. keep your eyes open for old skool greats such as Malcolm Daly and Russ Clune!) http://vimeo.com/11977110
Next up was the evolv Punk Rock dyno comp. After 3 years of doing this I finally got it figured out and next years will be a thousand times better! But this year was still a blast and in both the men’s and women’s we had to have a jump off for 1st and 2nd. The men’s was out of control going for 20 minutes with the crowd screaming “one last jump” as Griffin and Matt threw themselves at these jumps over and over! Ultimately it had to be settled the old fashion way with a game of Rock Paper Scissors. Enjoy the video http://vimeo.com/11977110
2 years in a row now Freakbass has Funked’ our socks off! For hours these guys didn’t stop groovin’ and we didn’t stop moooovin’!!!!! (pps…keep your eyes open for Lynn Hill ROCKIN out!) http://vimeo.com/11978181
Y’all best be with us next year!!!!!
