Heroes…we’ve all got ‘em
Just stumbled across this website http://growingupheroes.com/ and other than it being awesomely funny it brought me back to when I looked up to my heroes.
<———-Not me by the way
Remember those days when the word “hero” conjured images of beings faster than speeding trains, super mutant powers, wall climbing abilities, flying, invisibility, x-ray vision and all being done with underwear on the outside of tights?! Yeah those were the days. The days when reality was defined by your imagination and the bounds were limitless. My buddy Vinny wore a towel his mom safety pinned around his neck for a year in 3rd grade because he was convinced he was his hero Superman. I think that ended when he broke his ankle and found out he wasn’t invincible. Either that or he convinced himself the world around him was made of Kryptonite and he would be powerless until the “real” Superman came and took him away to fight evildoers by his side on some distant planet. ;)
<——This guy is definitely being a hero right now!
<———-Yeah that’s me back in the day all dressed up for Halloween with my lil’ sister. Put a sheet on a kid and “Voila” instant transportation into the land of heroes and make believe…and by the looks of it hereditary nose picking.
Then there was that change when “heroes” wasn’t a fantastical creature but a tangible one that existed just beyond the realm of our limitations. Athletes who possessed such incredible talents that super human was the ONLY way to describe them. And they were REAL! They were bound by the same laws as us, but somehow seemed to bend and move around them freely allowing success where so many had failed before.
<——Yeah this guy’s not human!
Chris Sharma was always an athlete that I looked up to in this regard. I remember my first time watching Rampage. Some of the things he pulled off in that absolutely confounded and simultaneously inspired me. It really struck home when I physically tried the climbs that I had seen him dispatch countless times from my VCR.
<——Inspiration to try harder numero uno!

But I think that we all need to take a moment every now and then and gives thanks to who the real heroes are in our lives. Don’t get me wrong we all need inspiration for sure (enter Chris Sharma, Fred Nicole, John Bachar, Kurt Smith etc) but take a moment to recognize some real heroes….Mom, Dad, wife, husband, fireman, cop, doctor…. You’ve heard it before and know the list =) The people that are there to save us. The ones who sacrifice for our benefit. And it doesn’t have to be a huge sacrifice either to make a hero and what’s even better about recognizing this is that you too can be a hero! It just takes that one key ingredient that ties all heroes together… selfless act. Large or small that sacrifice can change a life forever for the better.
While life and all the characters in it will forever continue to inspire us, the heroes will be the ones to truly save us. Say thanks to your hero and be one yourself =)
From evolv to you, Happy Holidays!
